Week Four: Find Ways to Do Good & Give Back

CSR, or Corporate Social Responsibility, has been an important topic for the past 10 years. And yes, this level of responsibility is important for a large corporation, but how does it pertain to small businesses? Well, small businesses actually have a leg up.
When big corporations talk about all the good they’re doing, many consumers roll their eyes. Facebook hosts many charitable fundraisers but is still tracking every click you take. Starbucks has their employees going through “bias training” to promote equality, then investigators find ties to forced labor in Brazil, according to the Fair Trade Project. They drown themselves in hypocrisy.
But, small businesses aren’t made of multi-billion dollar c-suite executives that are knees deep in controversy. They’re your next door neighbors, your friends, and your family. They are the foundation of your community. They impact the town’s economics and culture. When you find ways to give back to your community, the community will give back to you.
There are many different ways you can give back to your community. It’s important to align the good you’re doing to your business’ mission, purpose and values. Every individual business can make a different impact and every town has different and unique needs.
Here are some examples of spreading some Holiday magic this season:
- Give back to your employees. You can give them quarterly or end of year bonuses, or have a small employee celebration when certain growth goals are met.
- Support other local businesses. Partner with a local brewery, have items from local shops in your retail display, or even share their social media posts.
- Host auction events or fundraisers for an important cause. Bring your staff and customers alike together to support a local cause while enjoying fellowship and meals.
For every small business, giving back looks different. It isn’t always about writing the biggest check. It’s about intent, care, and commitment. Your customers like to know that you care about them, and what better way to show that than supporting the community you all share.
Last but not least, HAVE FUN! There’s nothing more heartwarming to a client or customer than to watch someone enjoying their work and having fun. Every encounter with a customer makes a memorable impression as to how that person thinks of you and your business. The best marketing campaigns can’t create a fun environment for your employees and staff. Most of our purchase decisions are emotionally driven. What emotion are you invoking with your customers? Are you leaving a valuable impression with the good you’re doing in your community?
